Chief Data Officer
Department of Premier and Cabinet, South Australia

9:10 AM Investigating the Journey of Data Convergence and the Concerns around Algorithmic Biases in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence

Over 12 months ago, the South Australia government began data consolidation across all government agencies. The aim is to use this data to identify problems and opportunities at a holistic level. The main order of business is ensuring the data is ordered and clean and driving the change across 105,000 employees. However the AL and ML components raise critical questions around algorithmic biases and their impact on society’s most vulnerable. The SA government is focused on ensuring that humans are making these decisions with the AI technology stack providing insights to support them. They are also currently working on a risk management strategy to protect the interests of its citizens.

  • Understanding the journey of consolidating data from across different agencies and ensuring it is clean and in order
  • Setting up an interim BI system to support BAU amidst the change
  • Building the Standard Reporting, ML and AI functionality
  • Avoiding algorithmic biases by putting the human at the centre of the decision making process
  • Controlling for biases: Working closing with practitioners to identify high risk areas
